Actress and activist Somy Ali, founder of the US-based NGO No More Tears, has once again demonstrated her unwavering commitment to combating human trafficking by rescuing 18 Indian girls from a harrowing fate. Somy’s relentless efforts to rescue victims of domestic abuse and human exploitation have earned her widespread admiration and respect.

In a recent statement, Somy revealed the grim reality of human trafficking and the tactics employed by traffickers to prey on vulnerable individuals, particularly young girls. “There were 18 girls and the youngest was 11 years old. The police got a lead that they were about to be sold, so they were saved right when they landed and were under our care for five days. We provided therapy, food, shelter, and clothing to all the girls. They were from various parts of India,” she explained.

Highlighting the modus operandi of traffickers, Somy emphasized the role of deception and manipulation, especially through online channels. “Many were sent plane tickets by recruiters who essentially work for the human trafficking ring. Particularly, nowadays it’s become women who lure these girls, as a young girl is more likely to trust another woman rather than a man. This is all done via the Internet. They are offered jobs and their parents deem this to be the best thing that could have happened to their sons or daughters,” she added.

Despite the financial constraints faced by her organization, Somy expressed gratitude to an anonymous donor who generously sponsored the girls’ return tickets, allowing them to escape the clutches of exploitation. “Last night they were on a plane thanks to this donor who wants to remain anonymous and is originally from India as well. He paid for 18 tickets and we were completely ecstatic,” she revealed.

Somy underscored the urgent need for greater awareness and vigilance in combating human trafficking, stressing the importance of education and empathy. “That’s contingent upon how much anyone cares to get involved hence educating themselves on the prevalence of trafficking. Additionally, how to spot signs when one is being trafficked,” she stated.

In conclusion, Somy emphasized the collective responsibility of society in addressing the scourge of human trafficking. “One has to be a little selfless, educated on the prevalence of human trafficking, and genuinely act upon saving lives. If these three components aren’t there I am afraid human trafficking will continue and grow exponentially,” she cautioned.

Somy Ali’s unwavering advocacy and heroic actions serve as a beacon of hope in the fight against modern-day slavery, inspiring others to join the cause and make a difference.
