Somy Ali, the founder of the non-profit organization No More Tears (NMT), continues her unwavering commitment to supporting survivors of domestic violence and rape. Each year, Ali organizes a special holiday party for the children rescued through NMT, aiming to bring joy and a sense of normalcy to their lives during the festive season.
The annual Holiday Party, a tradition initiated in 2007, is a heartwarming event designed to make children feel cherished, especially those who have experienced abuse and may not have the means to enjoy typical holiday celebrations. Speaking about the event, Somy Ali emphasized the diverse backgrounds of the attendees, saying, “We call it a Holiday Party because we have mothers and their children from all faiths, or lack thereof.”
Ali’s inspiration for the celebration stems from recognizing that many abused children lack the ability to receive gifts from Santa due to financial constraints faced by their mothers. She expressed her deep gratitude, stating, “There is nothing that can compare to that happiness I receive, and a hug in return is all I need to fill my heart with incredible gratitude.”
Over the years, the party has grown in scale, prompting a shift from being hosted at Ali’s home to various venues. The event ensures that each child receives a gift and leaves with a smile, creating a magical experience for those who have endured trauma.
Somy Ali acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the success of the event, crediting the NMT board of directors, donors, and volunteers. The treasurer, who flies in from Tennessee annually, takes charge of organizing the entire party, and a synagogue provides the venue. The support of the board members, donors contributing toys, and the dedicated volunteers ensures the seamless execution of the celebration.
Ali highlighted the absence of a financial fundraising aspect to the party, emphasizing its focus on arts and crafts, games, food, and the joy of gift-giving. With over 200 children benefiting from the event, Somy Ali expressed her gratitude to all involved, stating, “More people should give that mindset a shot and see the indescribable euphoria it brings in return.”
As the Holiday Party becomes a cherished tradition, Somy Ali looks forward to continuing this meaningful tradition in 2024, recognizing the enduring impact it has had for 16 years.
